Wow, these are hearty. They don't seem like they would be, but Ed, the hollow leg man, could only eat 3 of them! 3, count 'em 3! I couldn't believe it. These are a great bang for your buck. 1 pound of ground turkey, 6 slices of cheese and 12 egg roll wrapper suddenly becomes dinner and 3 lunches.
Okay, so step one is to brown all the ground turkey. Or, ground beef if you prefer.
Add in a few dashes of Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, garlic powder, salt and pepper. Once it's browned and cooked through, remove from heat. It's time to assemble.
Step 1- Room temperature egg rolls. This is important because they will break if they are cold.
Step 2- 1/2 slice of American cheese, laid corner to corner on the wrapper.
Step 3- About 3 tablespoons of turkey meat on top of the cheese. 3 heaping tablespoons.
Step 4- Time to roll them up. Fold in the corners first over the filling.
Step 5- Fold the bottom corner over the filling and the two already folded sides. Tuck this corner under the meat and start to roll.
Step 6- When the wrapper and filling as been rolled to this point, use some water on your finger to wet the remaining unrolled corner and finish rolling. The water will seal the wrapper.
Step 7- Here's what you should come up with. Nice and neat, and not too difficult.
Seal side down on the sheet pan, and then repeat until the rest of the meat is gone. It should be about 12 rolls.
I actually ended up with 11. But that's totally okay.
Drizzle and rub down with olive oil so that they crisp up, and then sprinkled with sesame seeds, just like a real hamburger bun.
Bake in the oven for about 15 minutes, and they should come out all crispy and browned just like they had been fried, but not quite so bubbly. I serve these with mustard, but ketchup or barbecue sauce will do just fine!
Cheeseburger Egg Rolls
1 lb ground turkey or beef
6 dashes Worcestershire sauce
1/2 Tablespoon salt
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
6 slices American cheese
12 egg roll wrappers, room temperature
Olive oil
Sesame seeds
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large skillet, brown ground meat over medium high heat. When the meat is browned and cooked through, season with Worcestershire sauce, salt, onion powder, garlic powder and pepper. Remove from heat. Start wrapping rolls by laying an egg roll wrapper on a work surface. Place 1/2 of a slice of American cheese from corner to corner on the wrapper. Top with 3 tablespoons of ground meat. To roll the wrapper, fold over the corners over the ground meat. Next, fold the bottom corner over the already folded sides and start to roll. Seal the one remaining corner with water and finish rolling. Lay finished roll on a baking sheet seal side down. Repeat until the rest of the meat is gone, about 12 rolls. Brush with olive oil and sprinkle with sesame seeds. Place in preheated oven and bake for 15 minutes or until golden brown. Serve with mustard or barbecue sauce and enjoy!
